Emergency Management

Emergency Management is the field of expertise that works to lessen the negative impacts natural disasters will have on communities.  A disaster can include varying elements and descriptions.  For our purposes we will define it as:

“A serious disruption of the functioning of society, causing widespread human, material, or environmental losses exceed the ability of affected society to cope using only its own resources (Blanchard, P.183, 2008).”

A managed disaster has 4 phases:

Mitigation

Preparation

Response

Recovery

It should be understood that even under the best of circumstances, it is likely some will experience loss of property, damaged property, injury or death. Through the implementation of best practices, we can lessen the overall impact of these events.
